Is your current ‘shelter’ meeting your new needs?

We have all now been through shelter in place orders and 2020 has probably kept you in your home more than you thought possible...  So, it seems like now is a fitting time to ask: “Is your current ‘shelter’ meeting your new needs?”

Living with SARS-CoV-2 on the loose, we have all been learning to adapt to our new conditions of social distancing and sheltering in place to limit spread.  With all of this time spent in our homes and swirling conversations about there being a ‘new normal’, it’s hard to not stop to ask yourself a simple question – are you sheltering in the type of home that you actually want to be in?

Our homes have temporarily replaced our offices, schools, restaurants, vacation destinations, gyms and more.  It is unlikely that the SARS-Cov-2 outbreak will be the only time we have to obey shelter in place orders again for our own safety.  Global pandemic aside, we face our own set of local threats here in San Diego.  Smoke from wildfires, incidents or events at any of our military bases, earthquake damage, and unusual heat waves are all examples of events that could result in our need to shelter in place at a moment’s notice.

With that, wouldn’t it would be a missed opportunity not take this moment to stop, reflect, and consider why you decided on the home you are in and if it’s meeting your needs?

  • Do you need more outdoor space?

  • Do you need more kitchen and pantry space?

  • Do you need a single level home?  Or a smaller home?

  • Do you need more space?  Or a larger home?

  • Does your home offer your children an environment conducive for learning and that fosters creativity?

  • Do you want more privacy or security?

  • In the worst case, how would you quarantine yourself?  Your spouse?  Your kids?  Extended family?

  • Do you have a garden?  Do you desire a home that provides a means for food or goods production?

  • Do you have a suitable office to work in?

  • Do you have suitable space to exercise ?

  • Are you surrounded by too much density?  Not enough density?

  • Are you close enough to family or your support network?

Home, is more than a financial asset.  Your home can serve you in a lot of different ways and now is a great time to reflect on how your shelter aligns with your needs here, now, and in the future.  When it comes to your home, there should be no place like it.

As your real estate advisor, I’m ready and available to evaluate what options exist for you and your family.  Despite the risks associated with COVID-19, your goals may be easier to achieve than you may think.  Let’s set aside some time to talk about how we find you a home that serves you in all of the ways you need it to. I’m looking forward to it.
