Rancho Penasquitos Fun Facts
The community is known by locals as “PQ” and is loved by its residents. The community is named after the first Mexican land grant in the County, Rancho Santa Maria de Los Penas which means “Saint Mary of the Little Cliffs” and took place in 1823.
Black Mountain
Known as Black Mountain Open Space Park, Black Mountain as locals call it stands tall over the community. At 1,554 feet tall at the peak, it is easily visible in the surrounding communities. Back in the canyon there is an abandoned arsenic mine off of the Miner’s Ridge Loop trail. In 2017 a San Diego City Attorney recommend closure for to test arsentic levels.

A mixed use project in the heart of San Diego. The project is 72 acres and will include 242 residential units. The project also includes a hotel, a movie theather, and 500,000 SF of office/retail space. This project will also connect Camino Del Sur from Torrey Highlands through to Park Village.

Hilltop Community Park
Overlooking Rancho Penasquitos and resting on Black Mountain, this park is worth spending some time at. It offers a walking loop, basketball courts, picnic tables, large grassy area, and an indoor facility. The park also hosts events throughout the year including a Western BBQ and Oktoberfest celebration.
Los Penasquitos Canyon
The Canyon Preserve runs between Rancho Penasquitos and Sorrento Hills. The Preserve is roughly 7 miles long and aprox. 4,000 acres. With Native American history dating back 7,000 years, groves of majestic sycamore trees, and a waterfall running through volcanic rock, this canyon provides a sense of local wonder.
Los Penasquitos Gardens
Home to a historic adobe ranch house built in 1823, this is the second oldest documented residence in the County of San Diego. in 2012, Los Penaquitos Gardens began provided lessess with the space and amenities to grow their own produce. You can also hike to the RP waterfall and Elchars Grave from the ranch.
